Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 1 carrot, finely chopped
  • 1 stalk celery, finely chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 can (28 oz) crushed tomatoes
  • 1/2 cup red wine
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 2 bay leaves
  • 1/2 cup milk or cream
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Directions

  1. Start by finely chopping the onion, carrot, and celery.
  2. In a large pot, heat olive oil over medium heat and add the chopped vegetables. Cook until softened.
  3. Add the ground beef to the pot, breaking it up with a spoon, and cook until browned. Stir in the minced garlic and tomato paste, cooking until fragrant.
  4. Pour in the red wine, scraping up any browned bits from the bottom of the pot. Add the canned tomatoes, beef broth, bay leaves, salt, and pepper.
  5. Bring the sauce to a simmer, then reduce the heat and let it cook low and slow for at least an hour, stirring occasionally.
  6. Before serving, stir in the milk or cream to add a touch of richness to the sauce. Adjust the seasoning with salt and pepper to taste.
  7. Serve the Bolognese sauce over your favorite pasta, garnished with freshly grated Parmesan cheese and a sprinkle of chopped parsley.
