Homemade Calzone Recipe
Homemade Calzones are delicious Italian turnovers filled with marinara sauce, mozzarella cheese, pepperoni, mushrooms, and bell peppers, all wrapped in a fluffy and crispy dough. This versatile dish can be customized with your favorite ingredients and is perfect for a cozy night in or casual dinner with friends.
Ingredients
- 2 ¼ teaspoons active dry yeast
- 1 cup warm water
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 cup marinara sauce
- 1 ½ cups shredded mozzarella cheese
- ½ cup sliced pepperoni
- ½ cup sliced mushrooms
- ½ cup sliced bell peppers
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
Directions
- In a small bowl, combine the yeast, warm water, and sugar. Let it sit for about 5 minutes until foamy.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. Make a well in the center and pour in the yeast mixture and olive oil. Stir until a dough forms.
- Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp towel, and let it rise for about 1 hour.
- Preheat your oven to 475°F (245°C). Punch down the dough and divide it into equal portions. Roll out each portion into a circle.
- Spread marinara sauce on one half of each dough circle, leaving a border around the edges. Top with cheese, pepperoni, mushrooms, bell peppers, and oregano.
- Fold the other half of the dough over the filling and crimp the edges to seal the calzones. Make a few slits on top to allow steam to escape.
- Place the calzones on a baking sheet and bake for 12-15 minutes or until golden brown. Serve hot and enjoy!
